The famous Chateau Mouton Rothschild was the only chateau to have been promoted to a higher category in 1973 and entered the Premiers Grand Crus elite. The wines of Baroness Philipine de Rothschild are known for the changing label per harvest with each time an image of a different artist. The character of the wine is characterized by red berries and cedar wood with in the last decade an expansion of a share of more than 10% Merlot. Château Mouton-Rothschild is world famous. It is located in the Bordeaux in Pauillac, on the border with Saint-Estèphe. It is next to another famous winery: Château Lafite-Rothschild. The winery covers 74 hectares and a lot of cabernet sauvignon, but also merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot are added. Especially in full maturity, the Mouton-Rothschild can be recognized by its bouquet, pure cabernet sauvignon.
The label of the 2010 Mouton Rothschild is made by Jeffrey Koons. Only 49% of the 2010 production achieved the bottle. The 2010 is of excellent quality and has received 98+ points from Parker. It has a very high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (94%) and only 6% Merlot with a 13.9% alcohol percentage. This blend also explains the great storage potential and with the 2010 the winemaker Philippe Dhalluin has made a wine that can easily be put away for 50 to 60 years. The wine must certainly ripen for some time in the cellar and is drunk from around 2020+. It is a dense, rich and full-bodied wine with the classic Mouton crème de cassis, woodland, licorice and floral notes, but also blueberries and a hint of subtle espresso can be distinguished. The wine has more minerality and precision than the extravagantly lush 2009 but we still have to keep our patience to taste this fascinating Mouton Rothschild.
