94/100 JS (July-2017)
"(produced from vines that were planted in 1912) Bright purple. Expansive cherry, cassis, pipe tobacco and vanilla scents on the intensely perfumed nose, lent urgency by a subtle mineral overtone. Fleshy dark fruit liqueur, floral pastille and mocha flavors are supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Becomes spicier with aeration and displays a suave blend of depth, power and energy. Finishes sweet, smooth and extremely persistent, displaying youthful tannins and lingering dark berry and peppery spice qualities."
94/100 Vinous (Oct-2017)
The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia. Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to shiraz. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952, the Mount Edelstone became recognised as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines. The 2014 is pure and complex, with lifted aromatics of violets, dark plums, fresh blackberries and blueberries, and the unmistakable Mount Edelstone signature aromas of crushed sage and cracked black pepper. The palate shows incredible purity and balance, with rich plum and blackberry fruit flavours, rosehip florals and savoury spice notes, finishing long with lingering plum skin and sage, and layers of fine, silky tannins.
The Henschke estate practises biodynamic farming; "I would like to see the next generation inherit a fertile and sustainable land. Using the principles of biodynamics and organics enables me to create the best environment for plant growth." Enjoy for 25+ years
