Bodega Convento San Francisco is a relatively new producer, founded in 1998, and owes its name to the renovated 13th Century Franciscan convent in which the winery is housed. The hillside vineyards are on distinctive soils of sand, red clay and limestone and all the grapes are harvested by hand. This is 100% Tempranillo, from 25-45 year old vines, aged 9 months in a mixture of old French and American oak barrels, and is full of rounded, vibrant black cherry and plum fruit with leather notes and some soft earthy spice but wonderful purity, a great introduction to this region.
