Altitudes of as much as 900 metres above sea level are what allows Ribera del Duero wines to project a certain freshness, despite their undoubted oomph (that's thanks to hour upon hour of hot sunshine during the summer). This was harvested by hand from Bodega Tionio's 22-year-old Peñafiel vineyard at an altitude of 850 metres. The organic Tempranillo (or Tinta Fina as they call it here) was aged for 6 months in American and French oak barrels of first, second and third use. Very low added sulphites. Soft tannins, a powerful, earthy and long-lasting taste, with blackberries, raspberries and some toastiness from the oak.
