UNESCO world heritage vines planted on a volcano in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. The rocky soils next to the waterfront are in essence worthless, except for growing vines. The extraordinary Azores Wine Company was set up in 2014 by charismatic rugby-playing, surfing winemaker António Maçanita with just 12 hectares of vines, some 100-years-old. This dry savoury red is made from a big field blend of grapes, to name a few: Saborinho (also known as Negramoll), Agronómica, Aragonez (Portuguese word for Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional, Merlot and Syrah
But for António it's not necessarily the cultivars that matter here: it's representing the unique flavours and textures of a volcanic red wine from the Azores islands. Fewer than 10,000 bottles were made.
