Otto and Elena Dal Zotto emigrated from Valdobbiadene in 1967, settling down in the King Valley, a few hours' drive north of Melbourne. Here in the foothills of the cool Victorian Alps, they grew tobacco before turning to vines in 1987. Beginning in the 1990s, Otto introduced the traditional grapes of his Italian homeland, which remain the cornerstones of their range today. Dal Zotto was the pioneer of Australian Prosecco too, making the sparkling wine long before Italian authorities changed the name of the grape to Glera (on flimsy grounds). They won a landmark case permitting them and others to continue making 'Prosecco' in Australia, but we currently cannot import it into the EU under that name.
The Col Fondo style of Prosecco is booming, and literally means "at the bottom", because the lees are unfiltered and remain sat at the bottom of the bottle, causing the wine's funkily cloudy appearance. This is the debut bottling from Aussie pioneers Dal Zotto, a vintage col fondo that's very dry, bracingly refreshing, frizzante, very, very long.
