The Vintelopian Everest. David Bowley's Odeon Pinot is a very special wine made in tiny quantities from an impeccable, organically farmed vineyard, 500 metres up in the prized, secluded Lenswood nook of the Adelaide Hills. The lodestar is Burgundy. Pale in the glass, belying an immense structure and presence and awesome aroma. David recommends decanting 1-2 hours ahead of drinking so as to unleash those fully. Crushed by hand and foot, naturally fermented, matured in French oak for a year, half of it new. You've got red cherries, cinnamon, dried herbs and spices. It's a wine whose structure takes you aback at first, then it is silky smooth and unrelenting. Vinteloper is a one-man winery in the Adelaide Hills, in which winemaker David Bowley undertakes nearly every act himself. He's obsessed with Pinot, and it's that passion and attention to detail that helped David win the People's Choice Award at the Pinot Palooza festival twice, crowning him king of Aussie Pinot. Odeon is his pinnacle: a very rare wine, of very rare quality.
