Since the late 19th century the Mascarellos have been running their own wine estate. It was Giuseppe Mascarello who founded the company in Monforte dAlba in 1881. It was Giuseppe's son Maurizio who bought land in Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto and moving the business there. Maurizio two sons Giuseppe and Natale fell out and the estate was split between them. Giuseppe completely renovated the winery, bringing in new Slavonian oak barrels. His son Maura took over in 1968 and began a decade of experimentation in wine making. When Mauro's uncle died, he took the chance to rejoin the two estates, considerably extending its vineyard area.
