Poggio Scalette is located in the heart of Greve in Chianti. The hills around the Greve valley undeniably form
one of the best locations in Italy for growing wine and olives. The combination of terroir and location in relation to the sun contribute to the superb quality of these wines. Poggio Scalette itself takes its name from the landscape, which mainly consists of stone walls that support the terraced structure on which the vineyards are planted.
The Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve has become a household name and, as with many top wineries from Tuscany, 2016 was a great year, so it is not surprising that the Il Carbonaione has received very high ratings. Suckling starts his review with: "What a crazy nose of pure fruit...." .
The Il Carbonaione is made from 100% Sangiovese di Lamole. The wine undergoes a maceration of about 12 days after which it is aged in barrels (Allier, Vosges, Nevers and American oak) for 18 months and finally a further 6 months in bottle before being launched on the market. The Il Carbonaione is a robust expression of Sangiovese from a classic vintage. The wine is carefully balanced but powerful at the same time, with aromas of cherries and red berries, followed by tilled soil and garden herbs. You also get lighter tones of licorice and tar at the back. Despite the opulence and generosity of the bouquet, in the end the wine remains elegant on the palate and is wonderfully balanced. Decanting in his younger years.
