Francis Ford Coppola actually knows three families of wines. Each with its own characteristics. The Diamond collection are actually the entry wines and are among the most popular wines of Coppola. The Directors Cut series is Coppola's top series. The most beautiful fruit a long education and a relatively limited supply and from relatively small areas. The Director series is the middle segment and for us personally one of the most beautiful series. As with the Directors Cut, the wines are from Sonoma, but the Director series was created when the winemaker created a range of wines to reflect his own artistic interpretation of the Sonoma County appellation. At The Director's Wines, the fruit comes from several Sonoma County vineyards, each with its own climate and terroir. The Directors series wines are characterized by luscious, ripe fruit, a light silky texture and soft, smooth tannins. Coppola's Director's wines demonstrate Sonoma County's uniqueness and style.
The Sonoma Coast Director's Pinot comes from several vineyards across the appellation. The region is known for the influx of daily fog and sea breeze which adds to the complexity of this wine and is a gift from nature. The Director's Sonoma County Pinot Noir is made from a blend of the fruits of the Carneros and Russian River Valley vineyards. The grapes of the Carneros vineyard have notes of herbs and earth, while the fruit of the Russian River offers a lot of density and richness. Harvesting took place in the very early morning so that the grapes retain their vibrancy and freshness. The wines are aged in Burgundy barrels for 6 months (70% French and 30% Hungarian oak, 20% new).
The Director Sonoma County Pinot Noir reflects the beauty of a great vintage with a seductive scent of raspberries, cherries, and rose petals. Silky on entry but broadens in the mouth with a pleasant mouthfeel with fresh strawberries, raspberry and a little clove. A nice finish with some roasted oak on the end. This is a very elegant wine that is a good accompaniment to grilled salmon, pork chops or mushroom risotto.
