One of the stars in the field of white Godello wines and the red Mencia from the Valdeorras is the winery Val De Sil which focuses strongly on the Galician grape Godello and Mencia. The bodega has its vineyards in the Sil valley with its unique slate soils which make the wines of this house unique.
The Pezas da Portela is a 100% Godello from 11 small unique Pezas (plots) in the village of Portela at an altitude of 500 meters with an average age of 50 year old vines owned by the family. Each plot is vinified separately in different sized oak barrels, then mixed and then left in barrier for 6 months and then in stainless steel. The 2016 harvest was two weeks later than usual due to late night frosts in April and fairly cold spring. This "quiet" growth has made this vintage even more refined than usual. What a beautiful white wine this is. Tones of smoke, toasted bread, vanilla, apple and ripe yellow fruit in the background and the unique minerality. The taste is very intense, wide, creamy, complex and refined with refreshing acids enhanced by a muscular minerality derived from the unique slate terroir. This is a great unique wine that will only improve over the years. The best summary for this wine is: Delicate - Complex with great finesse.
