Rivera is the only wine from Puglia with DOCG status. The owner of Rivera - the Corato family belongs to a small group of famous winemakers and is the sole representative of the Apulia region in the "Istituto Grandi Marchi" (www.istitutograndimarchi.com). This institution houses the 19 most prestigious Italian wine producers such as Antinori, Gaja, Biondi Santi, Masi, Sassicaia, Pio Cesare, Tasca d'Almerita, Lungarotti, Lageder, Jermann to name a few.
The Rivera SCARIAZZO is a white wine coming from a single vineyard located in the hills of the Murgia area, northwest of Bari and is a 100% Fiano grape. The noble Fiano grape is an indigenous grape variety from the Irpinia area, which was known as the Apiana grape, because bees (api) preferred its sweetness. The vines are old and accustomed to the many extremes of the region (cold, heat, rain, wind) and are used by Rivera to make a beautiful white wine and an authentic expression of the variety and terroir - a characteristic that all Rivera wines distinguish themselves in.
The wine bears the name SCARIAZZO which is a traditional vaulted building where sheep are kept. This construction is symbolic of the economy that flourished in the north of Puglia until the end of the 19th century. There is only a very limited production of this beautiful Italian elegant authentic wine of a maximum of 6000 bottles per year.
The Fiano grapes are harvested in the last week of August at optimal phenolic ripeness. The must ferments at a controlled temperature with 20% in new Allier oak barriques and the rest in stainless steel. The wine is aged in glass-lined cement vats on its lees for a period of 6 months.
The wine has a deep straw yellow color in the glass. On the nose, the wine is rich with a complex bouquet with smoky notes and mineral slate. On the palate the wine is also medium to full bodied with multiple layers and a very nice acidity that balances all components. This is a fantastic wine with antipasti dishes and veal and fowl, and certainly also with seafood. Serve at 10-12°C Scariazzo's complexity and solid structure allow for an ever-deepening richness in the bottle and can certainly plummet for another 3-5 years
