Philipp Wittmann (responsible for the cellar and export), together with father Günther (vineyards) and mother Elisabeth (sales) have built up a fantastic wine company in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Since 1990, biological and first biological dynamics have been used. The starting point for the wines is therefore: terroir expression through a healthy soil. A low yield per hectare, manual selection of the best grapes and a very slow vinification with natural yeasts without the addition of sulphite on large wooden feeds do the rest. The house is 'the standard' for Rheinhessen and now also a standard for German white in general. This is apparent from the enormous flow of international ratings that the wines receive, both the higher and lower. For example, Philipp has twice been named Germany's best white winemaker by the authoritative Eichelmann in 2003 and 2013. In 2014, he received the same title from Gault Millau. Philipp is married to Eva Clüsserath who owns her own wine estate in the Moselle and that is where this Ansgar-Clüsserath Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling trocken comes from.
In the Moselle, the volume was more or less the same as in Wittmans Rheinhessen: warm and dry in the summer. That caused problems on the slate especially with the young sticks, which do not root deep enough, but did cause problems. Eva Clüsserath, however, makes her spontaneously mistaken Trittenheimer Apotheke Trocken only from very old sticks, so she could overcome this problem with this wine. In fact, this wine is also regarded as of excellent quality this year.
A very steep slope -Philipp has a lot easier in that respect than his wife-, with detached 100-year-old canes from a vineyard of such a high level that it has been seen for centuries as a medicine, hence the name Apotheke. The wine is very classic from the Moselle: floral and fruity in the nose with a delicious drinkability, freshness and minerality in the mouth. This riesling has very limited availability.
This delicious organic Riesling is pale yellow in the glass . In the nose a beautiful combination of fruit (peach, apricot), flowers, flint and a spicy minerality. In the mouth a soft attack and a very high concentration with beautiful fruit, many minerals that are reminiscent of flint and very beautiful ripe acids. In the extremely long finish, the spicy and salty minerals linger beautifully. This wine can be widely used at the table with most fish and seafood dishes, white meat, spicy Eastern dishes and with a sweet dessert.
The wine is certified organic.
