Kalkofen GG is a plateau above the Grainhübel GG and lies behind the winery in Deidesheim. The soil consists of sand and - unsurprisingly if you consider the name of the vineyard - limestone. The riesling sticks are on average sixty years old. Fermentation takes place in tonneau (500 liter barrels).
Another warm and dry year followed in 2019. The harvest started at the beginning of September, slightly later than the year before. The juice of the wines has a high concentration but remains elegant and depth. The wines have fascinating aromas and are already receiving rave reviews from critics. Due to the extreme climate and the careful selection of the grapes, Von Winning has been able to make a very small amount of this very special vintage.
The Riesling Großes Gewächs Kalkofen lives up to its name. Chalky, pure, concentrated. Very intense and persistent in the mouth. Fine balance between acidity and residual sweetness (7.9 g/l).
in the glass, this Riesling has a lemon yellow color with alky notes, lime aromas and tropical fruits such as ripe peach, papaya and apricot on the nose. In the mouth the taste is spicy, salty and creamy. Lots of tension due to the residual sweetness and lively acidity. Long, intense, mineral finish.
This scarce von Winning Riesling Großes Gewächs Kalkofen is a gastronomic high flyer. Delicious with fish dishes with a sweet and sour sauce, white cheese & goat cheese.
