Yealands makes wines in Marlborough on the northeast side of the South Island. The vineyard for Southbank is far inland where the Waihopai River meets the Wairau River, the vineyards for The Crossings are further south and also far inland on the Awatere River. This far inland it is dry and cool with big differences between day and night temperatures. This ensures expressive and fresh wines. Miles Dineen and his team are certified sustainable. For example, sheep graze in the vineyard, so that less mowing is required and the soil automatically receives new nutrition. Other examples: biofuels are used, no pesticides and insecticides are used but natural opponents are promoted, the grape residues are composted and distributed in the vineyard.
The Crossing Sauvignon Blanc is pale yellow in the glass with a green tinge. Expressive on the nose with gooseberries, passion fruit, grape fruit, boxwood and cut grass. In the mouth a soft attack, very juicy and concentrated but with sufficient counterbalance of freshness. The likely reason for the great popularity of this New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon blanc is, in addition to the pleasant price for a quality wine, also the balance. It is expressive and concentrated yet wonderfully fresh.
