This eastern region of Austria grows more red than white grapes and this wine is made from 100% Blaufränkisch, arguably the country's most interesting red variety. Carnuntum is a project in Spitzerberg between winemakers Dorli Muhr and Dirk van der Niepoort of Port and Douro wine fame.

One of our members recently confronted us, asking why we would bother to list a wine from the lowly Blaufränkisch grape. Try this soave, smooth and elegant single vineyard wine and find out for yourself.

'The ruby/garnet red-colored 2010 Spitzerberg offers a clear and matured bouquet with floral flavors of red cherry and berries and lovely spicy aromas. Silky textured, pure and elegant, this vibrantly fresh but also sweet, intense and creamy textured Blaufränkisch is perfect to drink today. It has a firm structure and a rather austere finish and reveals some dried floral flavors. I would drink the 2010 in between the next two or four years.' Stephen Reinhardt, Wine Advocate
