With an enormous cult following, Kistler is one of Californias leading producers of Burgundy-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their vineyards stretch up the Sonoma Coast almost as far as San Francisco, and their wines are big and dramatic, but with real elegance. The wines are mostly sold via their mailing list, making getting hold of them exceedingly difficult. Kistler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir might be referred to as their entry level, but it is treated with the love and attention to detail as their legendary single vineyard wines and would outclass top offerings from many famous Pinot Noir producers around the world.
The coastal vineyards are slightly cooler, resulting in crunchy redcurrant, strawberry, cranberry and raspberry flavours, alongside some darker jammy fruit, cherry liqueur, earthy and smoky notes like a bonfire in woodland, pepper, rosehip, rhubarb and exotic flowers. Aged in new French oak for around 14 months, this is a highly collectable and hard to find Pinot Noir. Superbly balanced with firm acidity, this wine will cellar wonderfully. Although almost never submitted to the critics for their rating, we think this is every bit as good as the single vineyard wines and can be enjoyed alongside veal carpaccio, beef tartare, pink duck or Milanese risotto.
