Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards, O.t.v. Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2016
Type | Red |

Country/Region | South Africa, Stellenbosch |
Vintage | 2016 |
Uva Mira benefits from the location of its mountain vineyards, which are 620 metres above sea level at their highest point, as the climate falls into category two on the Winkler Scale. In laymans terms this means it has a lot more in common with vineyards in France than their South African neighbours. This, alongside the decomposed granite soils, allows them to produce wines which are the finest expression of terroir weve seen from anywhere in the New World.
O.T.V is a Bordeaux blend dominated by 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, a rare find in South Africa where Cab Sav is usually preferred as it ripens better – however, the aforementioned unique vineyards and climate are the perfect growing conditions for Uva Mira to produce world class Cabernet Franc. The wine is produced in tiny quantities of less than 1200 bottles per vintage and was the first South African wine to win the coveted Bordeaux Blend Trophy at the Six Nations Wine Challenge in 2017, followed by a Gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards and a score of 96/100 from Tim Atkin this year – in short, it’s a pretty special wine.
The wine itself, which is named in honour of the owner’s father Ockert Tobias Venter, possesses an effortlessly seductive nose of fragrant dark plum and mulberry aromas mingle with inviting fresh tobacco leaf and hints of wild jasmine. Elegant, floral and expressive with stunning purity of fruit and subtle creaminess.
Immaculate fruit purity is met with steely minerality, a creamy texture and appealing savouryness. Opulent fruit builds on the palate with floral and earthy notes and silky yet firm tannins. Immensely long, linear and refreshing right through to the finish. A wine of magnificent purity, handcrafted to impress
