First introduced in 1993 and relaunched in 2015, Crown Jewel Gin by Beefeater is
flavored with the classic Beefeater botanicals: Juniper, angelica root and
seeds, coriander seeds, licorice root, almonds, orris root, orange peel and
lemon peel. Grapefruit peel is also added to give a special note. Maceration
takes 24 hours and subsequent distillation takes eight hours.
The gin is a tribute to the British Crown Jewels, which are kept in the Tower of
London, and to the Tower's famous ravens. The names of the eight most important
ravens are engraved on the bottle.
Beefeater Gin is produced in the London borough of Kennington and is based on
wheat. The history of gin dates back to 1862 and the recipe for today's gin was
recorded in 1895. The name Beefeater refers colloquially to the Yeoman Warders
of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, who act as
orderlies and tourist guides in the Tower of London.
