In 1921, the travel pharmacist Hugo Kuemmerling in Deesbach, Thuringia,
developed his first alcohol-based herbal mixture. The result was a bitters that
he called "Boonekamp". He then spent years developing the recipes for his unique
herbal blends, which are still used today. The production facility was rebuilt
and modernized in 1963 by Johannes Presch, son-in-law of the founder, in
Bodenheim near Mainz.
The top-secret recipe for the herbal liqueur is based exclusively on natural
ingredients, which make its semi-bitter taste unmistakable.
