The history of the traditional vermouth house Noilly Prat begins with Joseph
Noilly, a wine and spirits merchant from Lyon, who developed a special recipe
for French vermouth in 1813. In 1850, his son Louis Noilly founded the company
in Marseillan, near Montpellier in the south of France. Claudius Prat, his
son-in-law, joined the company in 1853, whereupon it was renamed Noilly Prat &
Cie. The Original Dry Vermouth contributed to the global recognition of the
brand among vermouth and cocktail enthusiasts and bartenders. Today, Noilly Prat
is part of Bacardi.
Noilly Prat Rouge, a ruby red French vermouth, is produced by the same company.
This vermouth is based on a blend of dry white wines, in particular Clairette
and Picpoul de Pinet, which are enriched with Mistela wine and extracts from
various botanicals after ageing.
Additional botanicals are used for the Noilly Prat Rouge, including saffron from
Greece, lavender from France, cloves from Madagascar and cocoa beans from
Venezuela, which give it its characteristic color and complex aroma profile.
