Founded in 1826 by James Henderson, the Pulteney distillery, named after the
then newly established district of Pulteneytown in Wick, is one of the most
northerly distilleries in Scotland. Its unique location, accessible only by sea,
shaped its history: barley arrived by ship and whisky left the distillery at the
hands of the workers, who were also herring fishermen.

A major modernization took place in 1958 under J&G Stodart Ltd, with the old
floor maltings giving way to today's visitor center. After various company
takeovers, the distillery finally ended up with Inver House Distillers, who took
it over in 1995. A new era began with the launch of Old Pulteney 12 Years Old in
1997.

Today, far removed from its past as a herring fishing port, the Pulteney
distillery remains a proud part of Wick. Under the direction of Malcolm Waring,
the dedicated team produces around 900,000 liters of single malt Scotch whisky
every year.

For the Old Pulteney Coastal series, the inspiration for the name and the
production of the malts came from various coastal regions around the world.
Depending on the coastal region, the whiskies are given their special finish in
the typical casks of that coast. In total, this series consists of 4 whiskies,
which are released annually.

The Old Pulteney Coastal Series Pineau des Charantes was inspired by the French
coastal region north of Bordeaux. It is matured in Pineau des Charentes casks,
which give this unique whisky its wonderful nuances. It is bottled without chill
filtration and without the addition of colorants.
