In 1790, 25-year-old George Sandeman, the son of a wealthy Scottish carpenter,
asked his father for a loan of 300 pounds. His aim was to set up as a wine
merchant in London. George Sandeman then founded the Sandeman company, which
later became one of the world's leading suppliers of port and sherry.
From the outset, Sandeman specialized in the production and trade of port and
sherry. Unlike today, he did not run his business from his own offices, but from
Tom's Coffee House in Birchin Lane in London. At that time, business was often
conducted on the basis of a "gentleman's word". George Sandeman quickly gained
an excellent reputation, which still characterizes the Sandeman company today.
Specially selected port wines are used for ageing in wooden barrels. Gradual
exposure to air concentrates the aromas and the ruby tones develop into a deep
amber hue, creating the rare and delicious Sandeman Porto Tawny 30 Year Old.
Ageing intensifies the fruit and produces the complex aromas characteristic of
Tawny Port.
