The Winkler-Hermaden winery, located on the Kapfensteiner Kogel in south-eastern
Styria, comprises 40 hectares of vineyards. Georg Winkler-Hermaden took over
management from his father Burkhardt in 1977 and expanded the estate from its
original 4 hectares to 38 hectares. Margot Winkler-Hermaden, who grew up in
Bavaria and studied at the Weihenstephan University of Applied Sciences, also
contributed her agricultural experience. The couple, who met through mutual
acquaintances, have been running the winery together since 1986.
The Winkler-Hermaden Blauer Zweigelt is made from the Blauer Zweigelt grape
variety. The wine matures for 12 months in large wooden barrels, which allow the
subtle aromas of the oak to be absorbed. The vines grow on brown soil enriched
with volcanic material, which gives the wine a special mineral note. The grapes
for this vintage were harvested in September 2017. The wine is bottled with a
practical screw cap, which ensures the freshness and purity of the wine.
