Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Alcohol | 20% |
93 Points - Revista Adega. The Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny Port is a traditional blend of grapes including Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cao, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Francesca. Under the expert guidance of David Guimaraens, a sixth-generation winemaker, nothing is left to chance. Grapes are gathered from the best vineyards in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior regions and are made in the traditional way with fortification with grape spirit halting the fermentation to leave some residual sugar in the wine. Starting life as a lip-staining purple, the wine is placed into small oak casks of around 630 litres, from which it emerges two decades later as russet red, mellow, complex and utterly delicious. The Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny Port is a wonderful expression of tawny Port. A fine wine thats affordable to all.

91 Points - Decanter
"Quite deep brick red hue with a thin, tawny rim. Open, welcoming creamy nose with a hint of vanilla. Full, soft and fleshy, hazelnut complexity, by no means as delicate as some but still well-balanced with a full, spicy finish. Soft and satisfying."
Blend: Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cao, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Francesca
Taste
Russet red with an amber rim, the colour provides a perfect entrée to the nature of this wonderful wine. The nose combines fruity tones of cherries, plums, honey, fruit cake spice, and crushed nuts. The palate is decadently rich, boasting a luxurious mouthfeel and flavours of cherries, figs, prunes, honey, spices, and vanilla before a warm, tangy acidity comes in giving balance and harmony. The ideal Port to serve with all kinds of cheese, it will also accompany fruity deserts or pâtes, though, frankly, we think its best on its own. The dazzling complexity and soft, plump nature make it a wine that was made to sip and savour with good company.
About the Producer
Fonseca is one of the greatest names of Port wine. Founded in 1815, their wines are characterised by power, charm and elegance. Their tawny or wood Ports so called as the wines are aged in barrels for up to 40 years are unbeatable. For some Port producers, tawny Ports are a convenient method of using up grapes that they cant use for finer vintage wines. Fonseca though specially selects grapes that have the character to stand up to the extended ageing period. Conscious of the precious environment in which they produce their wines, Fonseca has invested heavily in sustainable winemaking. It was the first lodge to offer a wholly organic Port and respect for the planet influences all their activities. This has been made easier by the bulk of their fruit coming from their own perfectly placed vineyards. When it comes to Tawny Port, Fonseca offers a unique and sublime drinking experience.
