Tiefenbrunner Turmhof Lagrein 2020
Vintage | 2020 |
Alcohol | 13.5% |
Grenache, Merlot and Syrah with the grape being drawn from several small, high-quality sites across the plateau and coastal-influenced slopes. The mixture of slate and clay-limestone soils imbues minerality and richness, while the myriad of complex micro-climates imbues it with nuance and delicacy. After being hand-picked and given a long, slow fermentation, 50% of the wines are aged in used French oak barrels and 50% in concrete tanks. New oak is shunned as the idea here is to let the wines fruity beauty shine through.
Vivino rating: 4.1 (Jan 2025)
Taste
The Tiefenbrunner Turmhof Lagrein boasts a mid-red colour and an evocative nose of blackberries, zesty raspberries and a touch of undergrowth. The palate is juicy, tangy and fresh, yet theres real depth here as the fruits of the forest tones are underpinned by plums, mushrooms, and savoury minerals. The finish brings the minerality to the fore with a backwash of red berries, grippy tannins, and a savoury edge.
About the Producer
Tiefenbrunner is one the leading wineries in Italys South Tyrol. While its part of Italy the regions wines, like the wider culture, have their roots in Austria. Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, the talented team of Christof and Sabine Tiefenbrunner now run this exceptional estate. They are great believers in allowing their wines to have a taste of place and as such they believe in intervening (using natural methods) in the vineyard while being as non-interventionist as possible in the winery. With fruit coming from some of the most spectacular and highest vineyards in Europe, their wines are demarcated by freshness and delicacy allied to intensity and complexity to give a unique take on grapes such as Lagrein.
