96 Points - James Suckling. The Trimbach Riesling Brand Grand Cru 2020 was produced from fruit grown on the Grand Cru Brand vineyard which sits above the village of Turkheim. Brand sits on steep slopes at the beginning of the Vallée de Munster and its aspect is south/southeasterly, bringing the vines excellent exposure to the sun. Its name comes from the German for fire, a reference to the legend that a dragon and the sun once did battle here and how the sun warms its fine granite soils quickly.  One of the driest sites in Alsace, in 2020, a year that was affected by drought, it was feared that conditions would be too dry for the vines to produce a great wine. Trimbachs ancient vines had sufficiently deep roots to find moisture though, and having dug deep they produced a small crop of extremely high-quality berries that were turned into another wonderful example of Trimbach Riesling.

The Trimbach Riesling Brand Grand Cru 2020 is a classic Alsace Riesling. White gold with just a hint of green, the bouquet is a piercing blend of grapefruit, lemon, green apple, minerals and pears. In the mouth its freshness is supported by notes of peach, cooking apple, apricot and a touch of honey.  After a couple of hours open it blooms and offers softer notes of white peach, kiwi, citrus peel and creamy minerals. Medium-bodied but with great intensity, its just starting to reveal its full glory and will continue to develop over the coming decade. Enjoy this with oil fish, smoked salmon, poultry and game birds, or pork.

About the Producer

Founded in 1626, Maison Trimbach is one of the worlds great wine producers. From their base in Alsace, they craft some of the finest white wines on earth from varieties such as Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Riesling, a grape they are undisputed masters of. Today the house is under the leadership of the 12th and 13th generations of the family with Hubert Trimbach, his daughter Anne and his nephews Jean and Pierre at the helm.
