Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is the only DOC in Abruzzo specializing in white grapes, and is located in the southern part of the Abruzzo region in Central Italy. It produces around 142,000 hL a year in all four provinces, either in hilly terrain or on the plateau. An antique wine that dates back to the 16th century, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo derives its name from the Trebulanum grape. The wine is traditionally produced from a mix of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo grapes along with a cousin varietal, the Trebbiano grape of Tuscany.
Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is a DOC wine that contains at least 85% Trebbiano d’Abruzzo grape, the remainder made up of Cococciola (originally from Abruzzo), Passerina and Malvasia, approved by the provinces of Chieti, Teramo, Pescara and L’Aquila. Is harvested from the end of September into mid-October, and is most typically imbibed young, which usually means within two years of its bottling.
The wines are golden in color, typically dry, fruity and subtle, with a delicate bouquet and refreshing, crisp acidity. However, there are a select few that have had barrel fermentation and barrel maturation, resulting in a wine with more complexity, depth and body, with some even taking on honeyed notes.
