David Bowley is a self-confessed Riesling nut. Odeon is his most naturally expressive, ambitious and out on a limb. The fruit comes from Watervale, part of Clare Valley, a relatively cool climate region in South Australia famous for its Riesling. Harvesting by hand, 24 hours of skin contact, then wild yeast fermentation in huge (1,500 litres) old French barrels. Time on the lees (dead yeast cells), and matures for 10 months in barrel. The finished article is unfined, naturally filtered and bottled with a minimal amount of sulphur. A rich, textural style of dry Riesling. Fewer than a thousand bottles were made. Tall bottles too, like an Alsatian flute. If you like top-drawer Riesling, it's unmissable in so many ways.
