Grapes grown in Lagos, Portugal (organic, non-certified)

Wine fully made in London, UK

Grape variety: Castelao

Vintage: 2019

Hand harvested then shipped by Renegade in refrigerated trucks at 2˚C direct to the London winery. We planned to make around 3,000 bottles of this wine but with all the tartrate issues and disgorging hassle, we lost a load of wine, so we only ended up with around 2,000 bottles. Sad but true. This was a very problamatic wine to make.

A wine that smells like ripe bananas/banana bread! Strange but true. It also has notes of melon, stone fruit and a lovely fresh fruitiness.....

An absolute nightmare of a wine to make. However, who cares when it smells and tastes as good as this?!?!?

So Marsha is a 'Nat Fiz' (Naturally Fizzy), the French call this style 'Pet Nat'. Essentially this wine ferments and goes fizzy in the bottle using only the naturally occuring yeasts and underlying sugar present in the grape juice. We don't add anything at all to this wine. We press the grapes, ferment the juice in chilled stainless steel tanks before transfering the still fermenting wine to bottle before the end of the first and only fermentation. In case you are not aware, Champagne, Cava, Prosecco, Cremant and almost every other sparkling wine style globally undergoes 2 fermentations.

This is a hard wine to make in a consistent, clean, fresh, predictable and repeatable style. It is not a wine you can make in a bulk, industrial style. It is a tough one to get right. We only made around 2,000 bottles of this wine. We probably won't ever make this wine again so get it while you can.

We add nothing at all. So no fining, addatives, sulphur, filtration or sugar, water, animal based products or riddling agents. Litterally this is grape juice fermented in a bottle.

The only winemaking process that we needed to do on this wine was to riddle and disgorge it. Essentially because of the yeast and tartrate crystals that remain in the bottle after the fermentation we needed to take them out. Not because we wanted a super clear wine, but because of the tendancy of this wine to 'gush' or fizz like a mad man one you open the bottle. The only way to significantly reduce this was to take the cloudy bits out. It isn't crystal clear, in fact it's a little cloudy, but not crazy. If you look at the photos, the tartrate crystals in this wine were huge. Like big rashers of bacon! They are natural but not often this massive!

Marsha works in fashion and lives in Purley, South London. Her insta is @big_m0mma_thang if you want to stalk her.

If anyone cares, this wine, like all our wines, is vegan friendly. This doesn't mean they wave to vegans in the street, they are just made without the use of any animal based winemaking products.

Please be aware that this product is unfiltered/unfined and may therefore be cloudy or contain some sediment.
About the Winery
"Breaking The Rules. One Bottle At A Time"

Renegade London Wine is a cutting edge Urban Winery based in Bethnal Green, East London.

They do not grow grapes. They purchase small parcels of top quality grapes from around the UK and Europe, hand harvest them and race them back to London and make wine.

When they started making wine in 2016 they were copycat winemakers. They asked the growers how they should make wine with their grapes, and they did what they said. This was a mistake. They should't be copying other styles. London should be leading the charge on new wine styles, winemaking approaches and using both ancient and modern techniques.

So in 2017 they changed. Our wines change year on year and they rarely repeat a wine or style. They make around 12-14 wines a year with a total current production of around 28,000 bottles. This may sound like a lot but it's really tiny for a commercial winery. This is one of the main reasons our wines are not cheap. They try to keep them as affordable as possible but they know that they need to be worth the money.

Each label shows the eyes of a different person who lives in the UK. They may not be born in the UK, they may not have gone to school in the UK, but they're part of this country. They each form a key part of the rich tapestry that makes the UK special. As as urban winery based in London, many of the faces are Londoners. That's just how it's worked so far. Anyone can apply to be on the labels.

Crafted by world class young winemakers, Renegade makes modern, innovative, premium wines here in London. Why? No appellation rules, no tradition, no BS. Just great wine.

Top Quality. Modern Wine. Made With Love In London.
