In the 10th century, during the reign of King Gagik I of the Bagratuni Dynasty, a luxurious residence was built on Akhtamar Island. The name of the island is derived from the legend of Princess Tamar and her love for a handsome young man who drowned in Lake Van with the words "Ah, Tamar".
