The Fiano grape produces a wine with a mild straw yellow colour. On the nose aromatic with mild citrus (Lemon) notes leading to a crisp, clean, fresh light white wine. The finish has a fantastic and harmonious balance of acid and fruit flavours.
This Fiano grape is grown extensively in Puglia and is a very important grape in the area. It also produces some excellent fruity wines at very reasonable prices and consequently you get some great value for money.
Food Matching: This is a versatile wine and at its best with roast chicken, fantastic with Pasta and white or cream based sauces. Or just on its own with good friends on a warm summer evening. Serve the wine well chilled the makers suggest a temperature of about 12-14°C however, I like it a bit colder around 9-10°C.
Grape: Fiano
The Fiano Grape is not particularly well known in the UK and seems to have had a bit of a chequered history. It is an indigenous grapes to Southern Italy and was described in Roman times as the Classic Grape of the area. However, and quite uncharacteristically of the Italians, who are normally very loyal to their native grapes. It fell out favour and in the 19th and 20th Century large areas of Fiarno were uprooted in favour of red wine varieties, Trebbiano and Sangiovese. Thankfully for us that is now being reversed and this grape is being grown more and more. I feel that as the quality is high and the cost low then we are going to see more and more Fiarno in the future.
The making of the Mezzogiorno Fiorno is by using the very traditional methods for The grapes are soft pressed and refrigerated and enriched with yeasts and enzymes. Fermentation is in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature (18°C) The finishing and bottling take place within 4 months. The result is a great simple wine that is very drinkable!
