Fratelli Barba is originally an old, winegrowing family based in Abruzzo though with ancestral roots from Naples. For many years, they sold their grapes but in the 1950s, their philosophy changed and they decided to produce their own wines. Today, they farm over 27 hectares of vines and produce 9 different wines from 4 different indigenous varieties and one delicious olive oil. We love their wines' delicious upfront fruit appeal. The 2018 I Vasari Old Vines is a slightly different offering from its entry-level Montepulciano. It opens up on the palate with an appealing nose of both fruit and savoury notes - red cherry, plums, spice and leather. A robust yet velvety wine that could nicely pair with more sophisticated dishes.Robin Kick MW says 'Montepulciano can be a truly delicious variety. Some wines are juicy and succulent while others are more serious and complex. Barba's Old Vines is more of the latter style as it comes from older vines (35 years) at significantly lower yields than its entry-level Montepulciano, is fermented in French oak vats and aged in oak barrels for 16 months.'
