Van Hunks is a new and exiciting brand of Méthode Cap Classique (or MCC), a sparkling wine from South Africa made by the 'traditional method' which follows Champagne vinification techniques. It was created by the dynamic marketing professional Tom Gamborg who was captivated by the Cap Classique that he drank while living in South Africa. Never being a huge fan of Champagne which felt exclusive rather than inclusive, he thought how inspiring it would be create delicious sparkling wines that offer style and substance and which would bring people together. He partnered with Matthew Krone, a 12th generation wine producer from South Africa, who he calls 'The Champion of Bubbles'. The name Van Hunks comes from a Cape Townian legend which tells the story of Jan van Hunks, a retired pirate, who was lured into a pipe smoking competition with the Devil at the base of Devil's Peak. They currently produce two MCCs including a non-vintage rosé, which is a blend of 4 different varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinotage and (Pinot) Meunier. Slightly more vinous than their Brut, this salmon pink rosé exudes notes of apricot, raspberry, beeswax and pears. Festive and fun!Robin Kick MW says 'The Van Hunks is an easygoing sparkling rosé that includes some of South Africa's flagship grape, Pinotage, giving it a touch of uniqueness beyond most of the traditional sparkling wines that one can find on the market.'
