Made by famous Priorat producer Alvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios, Petalos is the wine which brought the indigenous grape Mencia and the region Bierzo to the attention of the world. Since its first release, Pétalos did not cease to get better with each vintage.

The 2017 Pétalos is made from the 40 to 90 years old Mencia grapes planted in steep slopes with slate soils, with a 10% combination of different white grapes, a tradition in Bierzo to add some acidity, freshness and lighten the colour.

Carefully selected and destemmed, the grapes of this Mencía red wine were fermented and macerated in open wooden vats and stainless steel tanks with frequent pump-overs and punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation was completed in the same containers. After that, the wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels.

Aged in 10 months in French oak, the wine is fresh and aromatic, a great combination of ripeness with cool climate freshness. It is ruby red, strawberries, ripe currants and blueberries are followed by floral, violets and some spices and light licorice. Everything is fine and in harmony with a silky texture.

Aerate the wine one hour before drinking.

2017 was a very unusual year in Bierzo, and here they started harvesting the 21st of August, when they had never started harvesting in August. There are more white grapes in the 2017 Pétalos del Bierzo, almost 10%, not because they wanted to lower the alcohol, because the alcohol was similar to 2016, but because the white grapes achieved perfect ripeness (Ricardo Pérez Palacios told me he's never seen such beautiful white grapes). The wine had been bottled the day before I tasted it, so they also showed me a tank and a barrel sample they had saved for the purpose of comparison. However, the bottled wine, the first produced at their new facilities, was really singing and didn't show any fatigue. The palate was vibrant, with acid strawberry flavors. It is very immediate, approachable, round and juicy, perhaps not with the depth and longevity of the 2014 but really pleasant and drinkable. by Luis Gutiérez
