In the Piedmont dialect, Sperrs means Nostalgia. After many attempts, Gaja won a (read DE) top vineyard from the Barolo region in 1988. Angelo has chosen to make the wine fall under the DOC Langhe appellation so that he has more freedom to be innovative. The Gaja Sperrs is therefore a Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and Gaja has also done this with his other top wine the Conteisa. The Sperrs is a 100% Nebbiolo wine, just like a Baralo but with a fraction of Barbera (about 6% for finesse and acids). By using the little bit of Barbera that Gaja (and also the international wine press) firmly believe in as an extra supplement, it has led in bureaucratic Italy that this is a DOC wine. But anyway Gaja is such a name that it makes little difference and now this story is somewhat similar to the Supertuscan of Antinori which are also IGP wines as they wanted to deviate from the rules of upbringing and grape use.

The Sperrs ferment for a period of more than 3 weeks in temperature-controlled barrels and is then followed by 12 months of raising on barriques and a subsequent eighteen months of aging on oak, and all this makes this wine actually unique in its kind. A beautiful light garnet red color with fruit concentrated in the nose such as raspberry, cherry and best, soft tannins and herbs and the typical barolo notes of tar, licorice and truffle. The wine has a very long finish and will improve over the years and integrate even further. Definitely decant this wine. The Sperrs a top Barolo ... o sorry Nebbiolo from the beautiful year 2013 which is seen as one of the top Barolo & Barberesco vintages.
