The wine is powerful and intense. Nice proportion in the acids, tannins the bitter. This is pretty firm and full of character, tempting by some sweetness and the color is deep ruby red. The scent is nicely open, sweet scent, jam and cherries, thyme and rosemary, warm and tempting, peppery, black pepper, temptation. The wine is made by Marques de Grinon in Aldea del Fresno, a winery in La Mancha about 55 kilometers from Madrid. Carlos Falco is the beating heart of this winery and he is personally responsible for ensuring that the syrah is planted in his vineyards. Syrah now has amazing results in both southern Spain and Portugal. At the time, syrah was a rarity in those countries and not allowed. Falco dared to take the gamble and was far ahead of its time at the time. Irrigation, then a curse in old Europe, is now allowed in dry Spain. Regulated, yes. Meanwhile, the syrah (and also the cabernet sauvignon) has been accepted in La Mancha under the Vinos de Madrid appellation. Marques de Grinon is also a producer of Vinos de Pago, a qualification for high quality 'estate' wines.
