This wine only comes on the market in exceptional years. An explosion of sweet tones, burnt wood and ripe fruit. Velvety wine with a very long finish.
For the production of this flagship, Riscal uses the grapes from vines from 30 to 40 years old. Naturally, the picking and selection is done manually. Only after approval from the cellar masters can the wine enter the market. Barón de Chirel originated in 1986 by experimenting with a very strict selection of different grape varieties from vineyards of 30 years and older. With a low yield but of a very high quality, it was then a completely new way of making wine in the Rioja, comparable to the 'supertuscans' from Italy. Dark red in color, delicious smoked and earthy notes in the scent, but also hints of tobacco. Very wide pallet of flavors with ripe cherries and blueberries. Long finish with powerful tannins, in which a hint of chocolate can clearly be recognized. Powerful, classic Rioja; nice balance between ripe fruit and vanilla, depth and vitality.
Innovative as ever, a few years ago Marqués de Riscal pulled out all the stops to create a new flagship. This is how Baron de Chirel was created in 1986. Harvested from the very best vineyard plots from over 40-year-old canes. Carefully selected grapes, hand-picked, and manually selected. Only produced in peak harvest years, when all variables are optimal. Fermentation takes place at 26 degrees, maceration no longer than 12 days. Malolactic fermentation in wooden barrels of 20,000 liters, after which the wine ages 18 months in American barrels. The wine is released after a minimum of one year in the bottle.
The 2014 has received 93/100 Suckling points and 94 Penin points.
