Aglianico is without a doubt the noblest grape variety in the South of Italy, capable of supplying wines that combine strength, complexity and sophistication. However, the grape is difficult to tame and in the past many Aglianico wines were therefore rustic, dried out wines without any charm. Today, however, there is a wealth of good wines from this grape, but we really do not come across really great class. The "Titolo" Aglianico del Vulture DOC from Fucci, however, demonstrates the incredible potential of this grape. Salvatore Fucci, assisted by his young daughter-oenologist Elena, has been making absolute top wines since the year 2000 from the highest vineyards (650 m.) Of the Vulture area in Basilicata.

The Azienda Agricola Elena Fucci is located in Barile, on Monte Vulture, 150 kilometers east of Naples. Together with other wineries, the winery forms the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) Aglianico del Vulture. It is the only DOC in the Basilicata region. The vines grow on 400 hectares, one of the best wines of southern Italy (Jancis Robinson). This is especially true for the Fucci family. Originally grandfather Genoroso cultivated his aglianico for the regional winemakers. He kept part of it for his own consumption. The 7-hectare vineyards had to be sold, but granddaughter Elena intervened at the last minute. She took over the winery and invested in his future. In 2000 the Azienda Agricola Elena Fucci took over the work. Father Salvatore and daughter Elena work together. From the first year, the gifted winemaker makes only one wine that comes from the vineyard of the same name: the Titolo.

The volcanic soil, the climate in this mountainous region (forget the cliché of southern sultry wine, it snows here in winter) and the miniscule returns ensure a unique wine, which has been widely praised in recent years as perhaps the most beautiful expression of the Aglianico grape. The vineyards of the Fucci family are located in the extinct volcano crater Monte Vulture, high on the inside. The earth here consists of black volcanic sand and everywhere there are chunks of lava. The soil is extremely suitable for grape vines: on the one hand nutrient-poor, on the other rich in minerals and iron. This is clearly expressed in the wine. In addition, it is always windy here. With the advantage of cooling in the summers, but also that in wet periods the wind blows the grapes dry quickly. Initially, Elena's grandfather sold the grapes from his special vineyard to Paternoster, a major wine producer in the area. But since Elena passed her oenology exam, she makes wine on the family estate herself. And with success. Less than a year has passed that Elena did not receive the highest award for her impressive Aglinico del Vulture Titolo.

The grapes were harvested on October 28 on a 6 ha vineyard with a yield of 17600 bottles (22 hl / ha). The wine is characterized by a very deep color, an intriguing nose with impressions of black fruit, minerals and flowers, an intense taste that combines fruit, fine spiciness and flawless acids, culminating in an impressive finale. Finesse and power go hand in hand here, characteristic of really great wines! Moreover, this is a bargain for this quality, given the relative unfamiliarity of Aglianico del Vulture with the general public. Elena turns this tough grape into an elegant, smooth and chic wine in this warm climate. Concentrated purple fruit, white pepper, appropriate tannin and an iron core of minerals and complexity. Can not be missed !
