One of the unquestionable rules when it comes to food and wine pairing is provenance coordination. You may have heard of “if it grows together, it goes together”. Well, pizza doesn't literally grow as such but you get the picture — local food with local wine is always a winner. So, it’s not surprising that Italian wines pair amazingly with Italian pizzas.
Let’s go through our three favourite Italian classics.
Margherita or Neapolitan pizza
The quintessence of Italian pizzas. Margherita and Neapolitan are both variations of the first ever-made pizza which originated from Naples. Tomato-based with creamy mozzarella and fresh basil leaves on top, they are rather straightforward in flavour and invite for a like-minded red wine.
Barbera, a light to medium-bodied, fruit-driven red wine with a good amount of acidity, is your perfect match. Valpolicella, also from Northern Italy, is an excellent alternative due to its fruity and simple character.
Quattro Formaggi - aka ‘Four Cheeses’
We all love the Quattro Formaggi for its distinctive strong Gorgonzola taste and that is exactly why you need a wine with a certain robustness to go with it. Amarone della Valpolicella is a spot-on choice. Full-bodied, more structured than Valpolicella, Amarone stands up well to the richness of Quattro Formaggi.
Yet, due to its tart and tangy flavours, Amarone is not necessarily everybody’s cup of tea. Primitivo from Puglia is a little more subtle yet still big and full-flavoured which makes it another great option.
Pizza Bianco with truffles or truffle oil
A more modern version of the original Neapolitan (considered it is dated back from a couple of centuries ago), the white pizza is an absolute must-taste. With this irresistible intense smell of truffles, what better than an equally flavoured wine?
